PHS Class of 1962

Cheryl Hunter Wiseley

I attended Texas Tech in Lubbock for 4 years earning a B.S. in Mathematics and Chemistry. In my sophomore year at Phillips High I had already decided I wanted to get into computers. Alas, no computer science yet so math was the closest I could get. I worked in computers for 40 years until my retirement at 62 in 2006. At one time I did go back to school thinking I would earn an accounting degree but I just couldn't leave those computers!

During those 4 years at Tech, Carol Cochran not-yet-Groom was my roommate. We did have a lot of fun and met some great people. I also got engaged during my senior year to Bill Whitsett (whom I later broke off with). I joined the Chi Omega sorority in my sophomore year at Tech. After graduation from Tech Carol and I ran off to Dallas to work. I married off 5 roommates and finally decided to live by myself.

On a business trip to Patrick Air Force base in Florida, I met my future husband. We got married in June of 1974 and moved to Virginia since he got stationed up there (I would have rather have stayed in Florida but they don't ask your opinion in the military). While in VA I managed to get on with the government and worked as a civilian for the Dept. of the Army and Dept of Justice. I got a divorce in 1981 but remained in the D.C. area until 1985. At that time I got an opportunity to move back to Texas which I of course leaped at. I moved to Farmers Branch where I've been ever since. It was when I returned to Texas that I met the love of my life ,Jay Schaefers. We stayed together until his passing last year - 25 years.

I have traveled some: Europe, Thailand, Mexico (hasn't everyone?), and almost every state in the U.S. including Hawaii. Unfortunately, I have never gone to Alaska and I think my traveling days are over. I have arthritis and have already had one hip replacement and will probably have to have the other replaced in the future.

I have lived in Dallas, Woodbridge, VA, Arlington, VA and Farmers Branch, TX. Not too many places considering my husband was in the military.

At one point in my life I was into sports cars and had (at different times, of course) a Jaguar XKE convertible, a 240Z (one of the first) and a Porsche. Later Jay and I got into antique cars. I still have a '34 Chevy and he had a '53 Chevy sedan delivery and a '50 Merc. which now belong to Jay's 3 boys. I have settled down now and drive a Toyota RAV4. Jay's boys and I consider them my stepkids.

Of my family only my sister Michele, my brother Gene, my sister-in-law Liz, 2 nieces and a nephew remain living. Daddy died in 1974 and Mom in 2005.

I now spend all my time reading (I belong to the library - it is the only way I can afford my voracious appetite) and playing on my computer. Pretty worthless retirement - just like I like it! Oh, yeh - I also spend a lot of time eating - bad habit! Every day I look in the mirror and wonder who that old woman is - time has passed so fast. And it would have been an ordinary, typical life except for Jay - he made it wonderful!
